What are my options to donate car to a charitable organization?

Bobby K asked:

I have a 97 Mitshubishi Eclipse that has 175K miles. It doesn’t run very well, and we would like to donate it for a tax deduction. Can someone, who has been through this process, or has knowledge on the various programs, provide me with some information on my options?

Contact the charity you wish to benefit, or check their website. They will give you a phone number or process. A separate company handles the process, you just want to make sure your chosen charity gets the credit.

For example, I went to the Polly Klaas Foundation website, followed their link for Car Donation and found both a phone number and an online form.

    Here’s the phone number: 800-380-5257
You probably can ask about crediting to another charity as I suspect that number is automatically credited to Polly Klaas.

After you call or submit an online form, the company takes care of everything. You tell them where the car is parked and they come get it. For most cars now, you get only $500 credit. Supposedly they will inform you if it goes for more at auction but that is unlikely.
